Hidden Signs of Spring—Wonder Wedneday

It's WONDER Wednesday!

This week's WONDER are hidden signs of spring. So far, April's weather could easily be confused with November's. But rest assured, spring is quietly moving in! Before the leeks, morels, wildflowers, spring peepers and blooms, there are stealthy forces at work to bring better days ahead!

YOU KNOW IT’S SPRING UP NORTH WHEN:

• EARLY SHOOTS POKE UP
  Look for little green tips emerging from the earth. Crocuses pave the way for the rest of the springtime bulbs!

• THE FROST LAWS LIFT
  In early spring, MI DOT imposes seasonal restrictions on weight and speed on roads that are vulnerable to trapped moisture under the pavement which can soften the structure. Once we're truly thawed out, big trucks will take to the roads again and spring construction will begin.

• ICE COVERAGE RECEDES
  According the U.S. National Ice Center (yes, it's a thing!), Little Traverse Bay still has 12-28 inches of surface ice. Check their page in a few weeks as that number dwindles.

• BCOF OPENS
  We get awfully excited when Bear Creek Organic Farm starts producing microgreens again and shares their Look Book with a spring-starved public! Stop by to ooh and ahh over all the green starts in their farm market and make plans for your own garden.

• BIRDSONG DIVERSIFIES
  Step outside in the morning and enjoy the song of recently returned species like robins, sparrows, and warblers. A bit later this month come hummingbirds, loons and raptors to add to the fun.
